Ever since childhood, I’ve enjoyed sketching. With very basic materials and a bit of patience, it’s possible to depict almost anything.

Braided Belt (Graphite, Winter 2018)
I drew this as a textured material study. It is an extreme close up of a braided leather belt I used to own. At the time, my initials were ‘JDL,’ and I hid them within the pattern.

Still Life (Charcoal, Winter 2018)
I was feeling a bit whimsical when I put this scene together. I liked the idea of a flower crown growing from inside the skull as a ham-fisted representation of life and death. And I just wanted to put something in there, since the scalp was detachable.

Cloth Study (Graphite, Winter 2018)
I made this piece for a cloth study in an art class. We pinned the cloth in two locations to create some visually interesting wrinkles and folds.

Three-Ring Binder (Graphite, Winter 2018)
In college, I kept sketches, doodles, and the odd poem in this binder. As a symbol of creativity, I decided to immortalize it in pencil and paper.

Everyday Objects (Graphite, Winter 2018)
I drew these everyday objects for an art class assignment. I chose a stapler, my keys, a pen I got from a friend, and an antique hammer.

Gear Drawings (Graphite and Pen)
While taking a machine elements course in college, I had the odd idea to draw a gear with nothing but a ruler and pencil. I first created an undersketch of triangles, then individually marked out the location of each tooth.
The second time around I decided to go easier on myself and used a compass, also adding a meshing pinion.

Face Study (Graphite, Fall 2020)
Following along with an online face study, I drew the lower image. To practice, I referenced generated faces to draw the others.
